Your body needs several important vitamins and minerals. Magnesium, one of the vitamins, is vital in transmitting nerve signals as well as muscle movement. All cells in the human body depend on magnesium in order to function properly. It plays a vital role in bone development of blood vessels.
Your body also requires several other minerals and nutrients. These include iron, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, copper, zinc, iron, sulphur, boron, silicon, manganese, selenium, phosphorous, sodium, and potassium. Inadequate intake of these minerals and nutrients result in imbalance that eventually leads to diseases such as anemia and osteoporosis. Even though these minerals are not vital to human life, their absence can affect your body’s function and health. So, a nutritional supplement is absolutely essential in your diet.
Aside from the nutrients mentioned above, a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement may also be taking to supplement your daily consumption of these minerals. Common multivitamins contain calcium, iron, magnesium and zinc; the main vitamins and minerals essential to maintain good health. However, some vitamins and minerals can be obtained through consumption of specific foods or dietary supplements. Some examples are vitamin C, beta carotene, lycopene, and complex carbohydrates. Some of these foods or supplements are leafy greens, beans, broccoli, carrots, citrus fruits, spinach, tomatoes, cantaloupe, parsley, chard, kale, spinach, mustard greens, rhubarb leaves, dandelions, bilberries, green and red peppers, parsley, kale, and strawberries.
Magnesium can be found in many foods and some are even fortified with it. Some of these are soy milk, orange juice, wheat bread, and cottage cheese. Other foods high in magnesium content include fish, poultry, eggs, beans, tomatoes, nuts, seeds, spinach, artichokes, kidney beans, and prunes. In addition, you may want to take a vitamin containing magnesium supplement. These are usually available in tablet, capsule, or liquid form and can be obtained from your local drugstore.
In terms of vitamins and minerals, there are two important categories. The first one is water-soluble vitamins and minerals including Vitamin D, A, C, E, and B-complex vitamins. The second category are soluble organic acids or lipids. For example, L-carnitine, which is found in meats, egg yolks, liver, mushrooms, dairy products, fish, and poultry is a type of fat-soluble vitamin. A liquid derivative of L-carnitine is L-glutamine, which is recommended for patients who are experiencing chronic illnesses.
To maintain good health, most people need all of the above vitamins and minerals. However, an individual vitamin or mineral may not be sufficiently present in the diet. This could be because of a deficiency of a particular nutrient or it may be due to some foods that are difficult to digest. For instance, some foods that are rich in magnesium such as dark leafy greens like broccoli, spinach, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage, mustard greens, turnips, and rhubarb are difficult to ingest in large amounts in order for the nutrients in them to be absorbed.
If an individual is unable to eat foods that are rich in magnesium or if they have a diet that is difficult to digest, they may consider taking a supplemental form of the vitamins and minerals. Magnesium is a naturally occurring element in the soil and so most multivitamins contain magnesium as a main ingredient. Some forms of magnesium supplements are available in chewable tablets, while others are available in powders. These supplements are easy to take, which makes them popular for use by many people. Furthermore, multivitamins are cheap and can be purchased from most health food stores.
Supplements for these nutrients are popular due to their ease of absorption and for their cost effectiveness. However, they are not suitable for individuals with low blood pressure or those who suffer from diseases that involve the nervous system. Another drawback of taking supplemental calcium and magnesium is that they are not effective against chelation therapy, which is used to remove heavy metals from the bloodstream. For these reasons, it is best to consult a doctor before trying any multivitamin or supplement.
