Most of our nutrients we need—like calcium, potassium, vitamin D and vitamin B12—are in the foods we eat. When we don’t get enough, a doctor may prescribe supplements to, well, supplement.
For those patients who’ve opted to take supplements without seeking their physician’s advice, you may be taking the wrong supplements. Or, the wrong dosage. Or, the supplements you’re taking aren’t working at all.
What do you do?
If you’re interested in adding a supplement regimen, get a blood panel first. This way your establishing a baseline. Then after six months, get another.
You’ll have a better idea of what you should be treating, what doses are appropriate and if your supplements are working at all.
Dr. Hylan believes that often in lieu of taking supplements, a patient’s health will improve by adding foods with highly targeted nutrients.
